The students learn to describe the basic properties of microorganisms. They acquire basic knowledge of the structure, taxonomy, genetics, and metabolism of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Further, the students understand basic techniques for the cultivation and phenotype testing of microorganisms as far as they can be used in experiments to apply.

The students learn the basics of the programming language Python or R. They are able to analyze data reproducibly with the help of the programming language Python or R, evaluate the results statistically, and then interpret the data. They will learn how to assess and analyze data and present the most important findings in a publication-ready form.

Students have learned the concepts and methods of modern biology and are capable of using them. They have adopted microbial, genetic, cell, molecular biological and biochemical techniques and can apply these techniques independently. Students are familiar with the major scientific equipment and are capable of using the instruments precisely and independently.

The students can describe and apply the theoretical and practical principles and strategies of synthetic biology and systems biotechnology in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems (fungi, yeasts, plants and animals). They learn to implement new synthetic biology technologies and approaches, including new cloning methods and synthetic molecular switches, and can construct signaling, optogenetic and metabolic networks for fundamental research and biotechnological applications.
